H.S.S. Celebrates International Stand-up to Bullying Day

On Friday, November 20th the students and staff of Humbeview took part in our 2nd Annual International Stand-Up to Bullying Day. PINK was the colour of the day as we took a very visual stand against bullying. 60 students were nominated by teachers for their character and respect of others. These students received a special pink t-shirt with a Humberview created Stand-Up logo.
The day started a number of years ago when two senior students in Nova Scotia witnessed a grade nine student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. The next day the two seniors and all their friends dressed in pink to show their support for the student and to show the rest of the school that they would no longer condone hurtful behaviour.
Students of Humberview signed a pledge vowing to Stand-up to Bullying. Research shows that by eliminating the silent bystander incidents of bullying drop dramatically. Students can report bullying at our Bullying Box, located in the Guidance Office and online. All cases are followed up by a staff member.
Humberview's Safe Schools Committee is working towards providing a safe environment for all students to learn.
Grade 11 assembly to follow on December 10th with Anthony McLean of iEngage.
